Episode 007 – The Watcher In The Woods

The Watcher In The Woods Poster

This week on THE MILKSHAKE BOOM, we discuss Robin’s pick, ‘The Watcher in the Woods’, a Disney horror film starring Bette Davis! Yes, you read that right.

Listen on iTunesRSS feed or listen here:

The back story for this film is fascinating. Originally pitched by an executive as Disney’s response to ‘The Exorcist’, the film was pulled from theaters in 1980 after a single week of disastrous screenings. Released again in 1981 with a new ending shot by a different director, the film would go on to gross $5 million dollars before disappearing from theaters.

The film opens with a 17 year old Jan moving with her family to a rundown estate in England. It’s not long before her and her little sister start to hear voices and see strange lights. They sense something watching … from the woods. Add to that a creepy neighbor played by screen legend Bette Davis and a 30 year old missing person case, you have an compelling setting for a story. watcher

Though not particularly frightening (at least for adults), it does have some interesting elements. Director John Hough was hired based on his previous work on ‘The Legend of Hell House’, and you can spot his horror background in the style of filming. The film also features some great shots by cinematographer Alan Hume. If you’re a Star Wars fan, you might recognize the name, 3 years later he was the Director of Photography on ‘Return Of The Jedi’.
